The Rails Rumble is on today and tomorrow. This a competition to build a web application using Ruby on Rails in 48 hours. Teams can consist of 1 to 4 people and all development and deployment must take place within this 48 hour time period. See the rules and FAQ for a full description.
I’ll be working on a project on my own. I haven’t really done any serious rails development since I joined DERI in February. Previous to that I was doing ruby and rails development full-time for about a year and a half. So my rails skills have become a bit rusty and I haven’t been keeping up with the latest developments. Hopefully, this will be a good way to get back in to the swing of things.
I’ve got other stuff to do this weekend too so I won’t be able to fully dedicate myself to it. I’m hoping to get 10 to 12 hours over the weekend. With that in mind I’m keeping it simple and hopeful of getting something useful up and running in that timeframe.
I collect quotations. I underline stuff as I’m reading. I used to have a notebook where I would jot down any interesting quote I came across while reading. The idea for the rumble is to build a kind of web2.0 multi-user version of that - a social site where quotations are the social object. A site for sharing, finding and discussing quotations where people can submit quotes, comment on them and rate them. Quotes should be taggable and searchable. It’s not terribly imaginative but I think it’s something that can be done in the limited timeframe and I think it’s something that I would use once it’s finished.
I’ll be deploying demos over the weekend as I add features. The aim is to deploy early and often. I’ve created a jaiku channel to track my progress. Check it out if you’re interested in monitoring the progress of the app or giving me suggestions and feedback on features as their deployed.
I’ll also be hanging out on IRC (freenode) on channels #railsrumble and #ruby.ie for the duration.
